New US Shows for Cécile McLorin Salvant

Cecile McLorin Salvant

There are two common stereotypes about jazz music today: too old-fashioned or too avant-garde. For those who have heard the young sensation Cécile McLorin Salvant, this must seem like idle chatter.

Describing Salvant’s standout performance this August at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in Harlem, NYTimes Music Critic Ben Ratliff writes:

“She’d earned the audience’s trust, admiration and humor, as well as its silence. She connects with jazz’s past and prehistory while being entirely about risk and play in the present, making her voice go precise or foggy, deviating from pitch or hyper-elongating a syllable. It’s fantastic to see a young musician with this much intelligent control over her material and her audience.”

At times uproariously funny, deeply moving, and always swinging to her own beat, Salvant keeps the audience and critics rapt with attention. As the curtain closes on 2013, the music world is buzzing with praise for Salvant:

Make it your New Year’s resolution to hear Salvant at least once in 2014. She’s playing a number of shows, including a very special performance at the Lycée Français in New York on January 9th.
